The Thistle
The Thistle has been the newsletter of the Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society since it was first published on July 4, 1976. Its name originates from Samuel Campbell, a Scot, who founded the first paper mill in the area. Campbell affectionately referred to the mill as the “mill-on-the-burn”, with “burn” being a Scottish term for “stream”, and called the mill the “Thistle Mill” after the national emblem of his native land.
As stated in the first issue, “Just as the thistle has been a symbol in Millburn’s history, we have adopted it as the symbol for the Historical Society. We hope that our newsletter, The Thistle, will be a valuable if not negotiable paper”.
