Oral History: Harman, Lillien, March 23, 1983

Oral History
Grandfather, Sylvanus Lyon, lived on 20 acres of land near Dr. Wellington Campbell's house (later the Chanticler). Her mother was born there and married Charles William Cox at St. Stephen's Church in 1889. The couple moved to Wyoming (now Millburn), which was a big move at that time. Family later moved back to the Brantwood section of Short Hills and then to the "barracks," which was a Hartshorn house (Forest Drive and Chestnut Place-still standing in 1983). Describes living in a series of Hartshorn houses in the area, along with her husband, whom she married in 1914. She also describes bowling at the casino and the entertainment they put on (plays, etc...). Other topics: the railroad, World War I in Millburn, the fire department, her education at the Orange School for Girls, her ancestors, who came from Scotland and France, skating on the North and South Ponds, the early years at the Wyoming School and Hobart School. Mrs. Harman and Mrs. Danforth Geer started the Far Brook School in 1928, which was called The Buxton School at that time.
