Oral History: Henkel, Steve; Feb, 10, 2001

Oral History
Five-page printout of an email from Steve Henkel, who grew up in Short Hills and lived here until 1961. It recounts his memories of the 1940s - much local flavor. Info on White Oak Ridge Road area and some houses and history; also mentions some local businesses. Descriptions of original Racquets Club building and some nice little details like he and schoolmates walking over to play pool or hide-and-seek. He and his brother got to know "Stewie" Hartshorn (the third), "a good craftsman. with all kinds of power tools" and they worked on projects together. Also an interesting description of very early projection TV owned by the Wilder family (the father, Marshall Wilder, worked for RCA). Some details on his time at the Hobart Avenue (Short Hills) School. A lot about daily activities, sledding, playing with friends - moving a neighbor's cow to play sandlot baseball.
