Hat: Josephine Layng Woman's Hat
Clothing/Dress/Costume
Tan burlap over brown netting beret made by Josephine Layng of 28 Forest Drive in Short Hills. Josephine Layng designed her hats in the small hat shop formerly behind her parents' house on Forest Drive.
Josephine Layng's brother kept a diary in the mid-1920s, with information about his sister's millinery business. One entry noted that Cora Hartshorn, daughter of the founder of Short Hills, sent her chauffeur to pick up her new Josephine hat. Cora stopped there a few weeks before to order her hat.
Center top of hat is solid burlap with eight attached loops. Some wear on ends of loops. Front and sides have straw-lacy design. Multiple breaks in the lacy overlay. Beret has a 1.5" band on underside. Hat is lined with a sheer black chiffon-type material. Label in side says, "Josephine; Short Hills, N.J."
