Kahn Collection: Tin Egg Candler

Object/Artifact
Black Egg Candler/Tester from Williamsburg Room, Millburn Library. Provenance unknown (possibly M/M Harvey Kahn). Condition: Black painted, handled, egg cancler with circa 1.5" X 1.5" broken mirror piece inside. Viewing hole on side. Very stained paper label says, "The Family Egg-Tester" with picture of woman looking through viewer to egg sitting on top of tester. Paper label also reads, "Manufactured only by Krepps and Co., 38 Bey St., N.Y.; 719 Sansom St., Phila." Instructions on label are, "If the egg is good, it within a manner be transparent (according to the thickness and color of the shell), If rotten or tainted, it will present a black or dark dull, blue color."
