The following description appeared in The Evening Star (Washington, D.C.):
"More beautiful weather conditions could not have been given to the 143 contestants entered for the Irvington-Milburn (sic), N.J. road race yesterday. Fully 10,000 persons were gathered along Springfield avenue at the time of the start--11 a.m. Probably never before in the east has there been such a gathering, and delegations from the various clubs of ten, fifteen, twenty-five were coming in constantly, probably 4,000 wheels being there at that hour.
The sun had dried the road until the dust was thick, making it exceedingly fast."
