Dedication of the Millburn Post Office Commemorative Envelope, 1939

Object/Artifact
Commemorative envelope marking the dedication of the Millburn Post Office on November 11, 1939. And announcement from the November 10, 1939 edition of The Item of Millburn Short Hills states: Millburn’s new United States Post Office will be opened on or about November 11. In cooperation with Postmaster Hayes, Mr. Athol W. Cliff has been appointed to sponsor an attractively printed cachet by C. Stephen Anderson, the outstanding first day cover artist, for this historic event. Envelopes showing this cachet, which portrays the new post office, are now available in limited quantities from the postmaster, or Athol W. Cliff, 6 Bodwell Terrace, Millburn. Cancellation date appears to be Nov. 13, 1939. Envelope was mailed from Millburn to Robert C.Baur on Milestrip Rd in Lackawanna NY. The addressee's name and address are surrounded by a hand-drawn rustic-looking outline of a sign. The left side of the envelope is marked "Dedication; U.S. Post Office; Millburn N.J." beneath which is a sketch of the Millburn PO. Beneath the sketch is "C. Stephen Anderson" and the signature of William D. Hayes (Postmaster). The envelope was acquired along with another envelope sent by Athol W. Cliff on November 27, 1948 to to Edward C. Wallwork in Durham, England.
