Object/Artifact
Receipt for goods purchased by Mr. Behring from David J. Mundy, Dealer in Dry Goods Groceries, Flour, Feed, Hay, Straw, & c., Millburn, NJ, dated March 31, 1890. According to a note in the Mundy file, the card was found in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Behring of 90 Myrtle Avenue, NJ in 1993. The card was found in the dining room wall during renovations. Mr. Behring built the home, a Queen Anne Victorian home, himself. The house still stands today and is registered with the local, county, state and Federal Historic Societies. According to his obituary, David Mundy took over grocery store known as Polhemus and Roberts" at Main and Millburn Avenue in the early 1880s. The store became Roberts and Mundy and, starting in 1884, was known simply as D.J. Mundy. In the 1890s, he made his former clerk Charles E. Van Fleet a partner. Charles E. Van Fleet would go on to become a member of the Township Committee, tax collector and also opened his own grocery store on Main Street.
