Photograph of 18 Chestnut Place from the 1978 David Gibson Historic Sites Survey. One of the original Hartshorn Estates, Inc. homes (Hartshorn House #19), from 1880. The house, known as "The Chestnuts," was purchased by John Fairfield from Stewart Hartshorn in 1926. The original resident was William Deen, as indicated in the Directory printed in The News Item (June 1888).
William Morris Deen (spelled Dean in census)-1852-1909:Deen was a founding member of Christ Church. He was an early resident of Short Hills Park and lived at 18 Chestnut Place (Hartshorn House #19). Deen worked in real estate and insurance. He married Emilie Augusta Andrews in 1877. His address in the 1890 Directory is Forest Drive. Occupation listed was Town Committeeman. Deen was elected to the Millburn Board of Education on July 16, 1894 and served as the first president. He was also admitted into the Sons of the Revolution in April 1894. He is listed in the 1900 Directory as living in Millburn at house #180, which he owned, but had mortgaged.
