Large scale full color lithograph of a Grand Army of the Republic memorial certification of Honorable Discharge for Rodger (sic) Marshall, company F, 27th Regt. N.J. Volunteer Infantry. The chromolithographic image is topped by a bald eagle flanked by two US flags along with the military scenes both on land and at sea along the sides of the certificate. The lower half contains a portrait image of President Abraham Lincoln at center, a cavalry soldier at left, an infantry soldier at right, and a battle scene at either side. The certificate was published expressly for the Army and Navy Record Co.
Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1883 by the Pettibone Brothers Mfg. Company to the office of Librarian of Congress at Washington D.C.
At the center, the details of Marshall’s military service have been added by hand in ink. The handwritten text states that Marshall:
“Enlisted from Essex County, State of New Jersey, September 4, 1862 and was mustered into the United States Service at Newark, New Jersey as a Private to serve for a term of 9 months in COMPANY F 27TH REGIMENT N.J. VOL INFANTRY.
Under Captain Daniel Bailey and Stephen H. Marsh and Colonel G.W. Mendel. The Regiment was organized at Camp Frelinghuysen, Newark, N.J. and left the state for Washington, D.C. Oct. 9, 1862, was on duty at East Capital Hill till Oct. 29 and near Alexandria till Dec. 1, 62 attached to 2nd Brigade, 1st div., 9th corps, Army of the Potomac. Engaged in Battled of Fredricksburg Vs. Dec. 13, 62, Mud March Jan 20 to 24, 1863. Moved to Hickmans bridge thence to Cincinnati, Ohio June 15, 1863. Volunteered services in Pennsylvania during the invasion of the Rebel army into that state after their term had expired. The Regiment was on duty at Wheeling, West Virginia and at Pittsburg, Penna. And in that vicinity until June 26, 1863 thence moved to Harrisburg, Penna. June 26th 1863. Thence to New Jersey and were mustered out and HONORABLY DISCHARGED July 2nd 1863 at Newark, N.J. By reason of Expiration of Term.

Dedicated by Comrade Marshall to the memory of his wife Margaret and Sons William Henry and Joseph Harrison and presented to Ada Lara Schmidt and Frank Miller May 1911.
