Mundy: Receipt from David J. Mundy's Store, 1915

Object/Artifact
Receipt for goods purchased from David J. Mundy, Dealer in Dry Goods, Grocerties, Flour, Feed, Etc.., Millburn, N.J. by Mrs. E. Kelloggs (sic) dated 2/23/1915 and signed pd by D. J. Mundy, March 18, 1915. The receipt is most likely to Elizabeth Kellogg. Verso of the card has notes about the Nathan Hale house and is initialed E.L.K., New London 1915. According to his obituary, David Mundy took over grocery store known as Polhemus and Roberts" at Main and Millburn Avenue in the early 1880s. The store became Roberts and Mundy and, starting in 1884, was known simply as D.J. Mundy. In the 1890s, he made his former clerk Charles E. Van Fleet a partner. Charles E. Van Fleet would go on to become a member of the Township Committee, tax collector and also opened his own grocery store on Main Street.
