Oral History: Betsch, Sophie

Oral History
Oral History Interview of Sophie Betsch by Alicia Roman (Undated). 17 pp. transcribed. Betsch and her husband moved to Millburn in 1929 "because of the good commutation on the Lackawanna" to New York City (via Newark), and for the schools. She did various work for Township offices. Interview mentions Cora Hartshorn and her work with Planned Parenthood; and how she provided stones from Hartshorn-owned quarry for the first recreation center (built before the one that burned). Betsch's ancestor John Budd was a colonel in the Revolutionary War and fought at the Battle of Springfield and the Battle of Monmouth. She was also related to John Stagg, another Revolutionary War officer, who she said was Washington's secretary at Valley Forge. Also: she mentions flooding in South Mountain section (some things never change) and her $150 property tax (others do).
