Shingle style house from 1881. One of the original Hartshorn Estate, Inc. houses, Hartshorn House # 21. House was designed by and belonged to Edward Gardner Layng (1868-1947), who was secretary treasurer of Hartshorn Estates, Inc. and of the Short Hills Water Company. The land was part of a 20 acre tract owned by J.M. Coggill and purchased by Stewart Hartshorn on December 4, 1878. Layng also designed the following houses for Hartshorn: 7 Chestnut Place, 77 Knollwood Road, 43 Park Place, 71 Taylor Road, 98 Highland Avenue. The house remained in the Layng family with Edward's daughters Gertrude, L. Josephine and Marjorie Layng occupying the house until 1990. Josephine Layng was also a hat designer and had her hat shop in the backyard.
