File containing photographs and articles of US Navy Chief Water Tender Francis Daniel Day, including material on the USS Day Rudder Row-Class Destroyer Escort, named in his honor. Francis D. Day was born on July 24, 1904 in Millburn. He attended the Washington School and Short Hills High School. In 1925, Day enlisted in the Navy. He was Chief Watertender on the battleship Oklahoma during the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, he enabled 15 members of the crew to escape and in doing so, was unable to get out. He was the first Millburn man to give his life in World War II. Day was awarded the Nay and Marine Corps Medal and the U.S.S. Day was christened in his honor on October 14, 1943.
The Millburn Veterans of Foreign Wars Post was named the Day-Smith Post in honor of Francis Day and Sergeant Harold Smith.
