DescriptionGreat Grandfather and Great Grandmother Campbell (on top), Bottom is Grandfather Campbell. Samuel Campbell (1765-1836) was born in Scotland, where he learned the papermaking trade. He moved to New York and set up shop as a bookseller and stationer in c. 1785. In 1786, Samuel married Eliza Duyckinck and they had 4 children. In c. 1789, he moved to Millburn and most likely set up his papermaking business in a converted forge. He established the "Thistle Mill" in 1790 and was an important figure in an agreement among papermakers to set a cap on the price they would pay for rags. One year after Eliza's death in 1798, Samuel married her sister Euphame Duyckinck, They had 6 children, 4 of whom survived until adulthood. Campbell manufactured writing and wrapping papers, plate pager, cartridge paper and paper for music printing. The Mill burned down in 1804 and was rebuilt in April 1805. By 1821, he employed 5 men and 6 women. The mill passed to his son and was then rented to John Clark and Oliver E. Bailey. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1857 and never rebuilt.
