Painting
Research by Tony Coppola: Edward S. Pettigrew, who retired from the H.G. Goodman Shoe Company in Ohio, became a much beloved local philanthropist here in Millburn where he was originally born in 1867. After, retiring in 1929 as his company's vice president, he married Permelia Goodwillie a widow in the same year and moved back to Short Hills ultimately acquiring a 11 room estate at 19 Hillside Ave with a 3 car garage and 4 room apartment upstairs. The 14-acre estate included many cultivated wooded trails and streams behind the home. Retired, he devoted his life to his family and developed a keen interest in Architectual Landscaping and the cultivation of fine shrubbery. Much of Mr. Pettigrew's philanthropy to our area centered around his love of landscaping, he donated the stone columned entrance, gates, and fences at St. Stephen's Cemetery on Millburn Ave., also donating the complete landscaping of its church grounds and cemetery. In addition, Mr. Pettigrew contributed to several beautification projects at Millburn's Baptist Church, Christ Church, and Springfield's Presbyterian Church. Plus, freely landscaping the township's municipal parking lots and many of its other public areas, including beautification of Taylor Park through the years.
