DescriptionHand-tinted photograph of unidentified sitter from the Brison photograph album. The photograph was on a page in the section devoted to local clergy members. As per the New Bern Historical Society: Photographer E.S. Wormell, whose real name was Elestus Springer Wormell, was born in Saco, Maine 9 July 18, 1838. He enlisted in the Union Army, 5th Maine Infantry, Company C on 24 Jun 1861. He was injured at the Battle of Gaines Mills and was mustered out 13 Jan 1863 with the rank of Sgt. ES married Lydia “Annie” Packard and per the 1870 Census, they resided in Portland, Maine. According to newspaper records, the family was in New Bern in 1871 as notice of his studio at 35 Craven Street appeared in a newspaper of that date. At some point he had a studio at 80 Middle Street. Mr. Wormell had his studio here until approximately 1878. Per the 1880 Census, the family was residing in Tarboro, NC where he still practiced photography. A note in the Tarboro newspaper, dated 17 Feb 1881 reported that the “ES Wormell & Family left yesterday to return to their home in Maine.” The family resided in Maine and then Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Mr. Wormell died on 11 Dec 1888 and is buried at Searsport Village Cemetery, Fitchburg.
