Newspapers: News Item, Short Hills, 1888-1889

Copies of "The New Item" and the "Short Hills News Item,:" March 1888-September 1889. The "News Item was published in Short Hills for one year in 1888. As stated in it's first issue (March 1888), the paper was to be a journal devoted primarily to the interests of the community, focusing almost exclusively on Short Hills Park. The paper covered social events, listed new residents, building operations and contained advertisements. In March 1889, it began more extensive coverage to include Millburn Township. April 1889 carries an article about a proposition to establish a "Borough of Short Hills," the rest of the issues cover township concerns, including town elections.
March 1888 contains a list of new residents (and the houses they will occupy). The list is as follows: Mr. W. Irving of he Phoenix Insurance company, who will occupy No. 7 (Hartshorn House # 7, 20 Knollwood Road); Mr. George Pritchard, Manager of the Lancashire Fire Insurance Company, who takes Number 29, at present occupied by Mr. Savage; Mr. William H.H. Beebe of New York City, who has leased Number 39 at the Corner of Park Place and Forest Drive; Mr. W. Fellowes Morgan, of New York City, who will take Number 35 on Forest Drive.
It is noted that Mrs. Morgan is the sister of Mrs. George C. Kobbe.
