Both Tompkins and Van Tassel were named "Special Policemen for the Year" by Millburn Township in January 1987. Irene Van Tassel served as parking meter enforcement officer in Millburn for 36 years. Virginia (Jinny) Tompkins was born and raised in Millburn. She graduated from Millburn High School in 1938. In 1941 she joined the Millburn Police Department as a special officer. She had the distinction of being the first and only female officer throughout most of her 48 years with the department, retiring in 1999.
