The photograph was taped together with an image of Lewis Schrumpf, who lived at 298 Main Street when the tree was taken down, and has "Milburn Item" stamped on its verso. The photo pairs appeared in the March 19, 1964 edition of the Item with the following caption, " The End of a Landmark--The once lofty Hackleton Elm, estimated to be over 300 years old and the Township's oldest historical landmark, was being cut down this week. The tree bore a wound in its trunk left by a four pound solid cannon ball, evidently fired during the Revolutionary War's Battle of Springfield. The girth of the elm, dead for several years now, can be seen in the photo at left. Standing beside the tree is Lewis Schrumpf who lives at 298 Main street, the site of the elm." The Item also ran an obituary of the tree. The name of the tree came from the former owner of the property, William A. Hackleton, who removed the cannon ball from the tree.
