12 The Crescent (Sunset Cottage), Lamb and Rich, 1882

Print
A hand-colored, printed sketch of Sunset Cottage at 12 The Crescent in Short Hills Park. Printed on left edge of print is "No. 315 American Architect and Building News Jan 7, 1882; Copyrighted 1882; James R. Osgood & Co." Printed on the sketch is a handwritten: "Cottage at Short Hills Park; for A.B.Rich D.D." and "Lamb & Rich Architects; 346-348 Broadway, N.Y." The house was commissioned by Reverend and Mrs. Alonzo B. Rich, the architect's parents. The house also contained a studio on the third floor where Charles Rich worked. The name "Sunset Cottage" was written in pebbles on a panel above the window of a hall. The picturesque appearance was enhanced by the architect's use of a variety of material (rough stone, brick & wood) and palate of colors simulating a sunset. The sketch was colored "post production," by St. Croix Architecture. See 2010.060.002.
