128 Hobart Avenue, 1885

Photograph of 128 Hobart Avenue. This building was a Zehmisch's General Store built by Stewart Hartshorn in 1885. t was converted to a residence in 1934. Shingle style. Architect: Frederick B. White. Features: course pattern in 2nd floor shingles. Brick work on left side of house suggests alterations. Excerpt from Stewart Hartshorn's Little Store on Hobart Avenue by Thomas J. Collins: "Whenever I visit my hometown and drive along Hobart Avenue near Gapview Road, I pass by a building that once housed the only store in Short Hills . . . I wonder how many who pass by are aware of the building's history." The store was controversial when it was first announced. Stewart Hartshorn received a petition from neighbors, objecting to the intrusion of a commercial structure in their residential neighborhood.
