Hessian House: 155 Millburn Avenue, c. 1922

Photograph
Photograph of 155 Millburn Avenue, The Hessian House, from Library Photo box. The house was built by Walter Smith in c. 1730 and sold to Henderson in c. 1885-90. It was in transferred to Harvey Smith in c. 1853. Amanda E. Reeve (daughter of Harvey Smith) lived in the house until at least 1922. She died in November 1929 and had moved some time prior to that date to 627 Girard Avenue, Long Branch, NJ. The house was owned by Mrs. Charles Reeve in 1934 and used as a house/an antique shop. The relationship between Amanda E. Reeve and Mrs. Charles Reeve (not Charles R. Reeve, who was in real estate and lived at 312 Millburn Avenue) is unclear at this time. Mr. and Mrs. John Ryder Rose were living in the house by 1946 and stayed there until the Kahns moved there in 1953. In November 1962, the Township Committee approved the Kahns' application to construct an addition to the house.
