36 Stewart Road, Short Hills, 1903

Photograph
Photograph of 36 Stewart Road. Inscription on back of photo reads "James Shackleton Photographer, Short Hills, NJ Photo Jan/15/03. Residence of J. L. Kemmerer." John Leisering Kemmerer (1911-2002). The house, at Stewart and Minnisink, was sold to Chester C. Cawthorne in August 1946. A description of the interior is contained in the August 8, 1946 edition of The Millburn-Short Hills Item. "The house, built around 1905, now contains on the first floor a large center hall, living room, library, billiard room, dining room, pantry, kitchen and servants' dining room. On the second floor there are six bedrooms and five baths and on the third floor there are four bedrooms and two baths. Remodeling and modernization planned will include the construction of a new entrance with removal of the porte cochere, rearrangement of the floor plan, elimination of some of the chimneys and re-stuccoing of the outside surface. Also contemplated is the tearing down of the 10-car garage and squash court on another section of the estate and the construction of a three-car garage as part of the main house."

Oliver Chamberlain edits to photo: corrected about 2 degrees to vertical, cropped some of the foreground, but left the indication of a driveway, and darkened it a bit, making the trees without leaves in the right foreground a bit better defined, as are the dormers.
