Giant Elm on Main Street Looking South from Mechanic Street, 1899
Photograph
This giant elm was well over 200 years old. During a surgery operation in the 1950's, a cannonball , evidently fired in the fighting with the British on June 23, 1780, was removed from its trunk. The home at 298 Main Street was owned by Mark Oliver. In the 1980s, the cannon ball was traced to the Paper Mill Playhouse, but couldn't be located. The staff believed Mr. Carrington gave it to the NJ Museum in Trenton.
