Doyle Family Ledger, 1888
Archive
Brown-leather-covered small ledger found in a trunk in the attic of 112 Short Hills Avenue, which home was apparently once owned by the Doyle family, whose ledger this is. The ledger covers are nearly detached and are very worn on all edges. The upper right corner of what seems to be the original front cover has a dark stain on that corner, and white residue (something showing from beneath the leather?). There are numerous stains and spots on the cover and a 1/4" vertical tear on the bottom edge. The back cover has a crack in the leather, which extends upward about 1.25" from the bottom edge, then becomes a scratch that extends nearly the length of the cover. There are only ten pages in the ledger, two of which are torn, with only half or less of the page left. Other pages seem to have been torn or cut out. Entries for work done ("carting cinders") were made from one end of the diary, then family birth and death sates were entered from the other end and written upside down from the opposite end. There is random writing on the paste-down papers inside each cover.
