Chatham Road Businesses, Short Hills, c. 1930s
Photograph
Ca. 1930's, sepia, glossy photograph of the businesses on Chatham Road in Short Hills. On the far right was Mr. Wittkop's business, which states "Real Estate" and "Insurance" on the window. It also has a gasoline pump in front of the building. Mr. Wittkop apparently owned the buildings. The business to the left of Mr. Wittkop's, on the right end of the Tudor building, says "Margaret (Fischer?); Hairdresser" and the one to the left of that says "Short Hills Market Co. Inc." A piece of the current post office can be seen on the far left of the photo. The photo has bumped corners and the bottom right corner (front of photo) is missing a triangular piece. The upper right corner has a 3" crease 1" in from the corner, which has weakened that corner and may lead to it tearing off. The photo edges are worn and there are small overall creases in the photo. The front and back of the photo are lightly stained all over, with a dark ca. 1/2" diameter circular stain in the center of the photo, and which bled through to both sides. In the center back of the photo is a stamped photographer's mark: "Bernard H. Biele; Commercial Photography; South Orange 2-7728; Please Give Credit."
