Millburn Police Department vehicle, c. 1924

Photograph
Black and white glossy photo reproduction of a girl sitting on the running board of an early police department vehicle in snow; ca. 1924. "1924" written on back in black marker (bled through), as well as "86" (or "98") stamped in blue. Thin card material. A few black and white blemishes throughout the photo. Larger white imperfection in the middle toward the top. Dark gray large blemish near the girl's feet. Millburn's police history dates to 1868, with the founding of the Millburn Mutual Protection Society. It was pretty quiet around town at that time, but that did not mean that there was no need for law enforcement. Officers were designed on an as-needed basis until 1907, when a regular police force, consisting of a chief of police and two patrolmen, was authorized. The three officers patrolled on foot and bicycle. In 1910, a horse patrol was established and in 1918, a motorcycle patrol was introduced. Police cars came in 1927 and in 1935, they were equipped with radios.
