Kellogg: John Woodhull Woolsey, 1900

Photograph
Photograph of John Woodhull Woolsey taken April 27, 1900. Inscription on the verso reads, "John Woodhull Woolsey 8 months, 4 days. Taken April 24, 1900. Died April 28, 1900." Mrs. Kellogg is inscribed in the lower left corner of the photograph. It was common practice in the late 19th century for people to take photographs of their dead children or to distribute photographs following the death of an individual as a means of commemorating the person and blunting the pain of grief. This photograph was taken a few days before John Woodhull Woolsey died and was sent to family friends following his death.
