Bosworth: Cargo Net, Des Moines, 1945

Photograph
Photograph from the Bosworth collection with the inscription: "Cargo Net, Des Moines, Iowa. September 1, 1945." The image appears to depict young women at a military training camp drilling on a cargo net. The identities of the women are not known at this time. On May 15, 1942 the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) was officially created. WAACs would serve with the Army, but not in the Army. It wasn't until July 1943, when Congress created the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), that women were allowed to be inducted into the Army. Between 1942 and 1945, 72,141 women attended the officers training courses at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. After their training, these women served in all areas and theaters of war. Bessie Bosworth was sworn in as a member of the Women's Army Corps on Tuesday, October 17, 1944. It was her second time serving her country, the first time being as a nurse in WWI. It is unclear from the photograph if Bessie is one of the women on the cargo net, as she was stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia in early September, 1945.
