Annie McMonigall's House, 23 Essex Street, 1926

Photograph
Series of 3 photographs of Annie McMonigall's house near Town Hall in Millburn. An Annie McMonigle is listed in the Millburn Directories starting in 1898. The address listed is Elm Street near Essex, which is behind where the Town Hall stood. The inscription on the back of the photos dates the photos to December 1, 1926. Annie McMonigall, c. 1858-1941 was a well-known figure in Millburn for surrounding her home on Essex Street, behind town hall, with old crates and boxes. She attracted attention from the press by strongly objecting to the periodic clean up efforts of the Millburn Police and Fire Departments. In her later years, she was impoverished and received financial assistance from the Town. There is a lengthy correspondence between Annie E. McMonigall, township officials and lawyers regarding the state of her house and property. Although she signed her name McMonigall, her name spelled in the documents & press as: McMonigle, McMonigale, MacMonigle, and Mulligan. Part of the house was destroyed in July 1929 by fire, but there were still buildings on the site as late as 1950, when there was a proposal to relocate the house to the Poor Farm Property.
