Esther Nichter at Sara Lewis Hatbox

"Esther Nichter at Sara Lewis, Millburn, NJ" hat box. In the 1968 directory, Sara Lewis was recorded as a woman's dress shop at 51-53 Main Street, owned by Mrs. Sara Lewis, who lived in East Orange. In the 1940 US census, 27-year-old Esther Nichter was living in Newark with her husband William, who made hat blocks for women's hats. Box has a black, glossy bottom, and sides, as does the lid top. Side of lid has gold polka dots on white and a gold carrying cord goes through holes in the side of the box body. All edges show wear, as does the top, bottom, and sides. Approximately 8 small nicks in the box side are in a vertical line coming up from the bottom of the box. Approximately 8-10 small nicks are scattered around the sides of the box body. About 20-21, generally parallel, 1/8"-1/4" long linear nicks/tears in the black coating circling the bottom of the box. The lid has about 4 linear smudges, primarily around the name.
